When you type family photography near me into Google, what you’re probably hoping to find isn’t a stranger’s studio with perfect backdrops or a long list of posing tips. You want something that feels like you: familiar, real, and fun.
The good news is, Melbourne is full of beautiful spots that lend themselves to relaxed and fun family photos. From colourful laneways to quiet bush tracks, there’s no shortage of places where you can just be, and the photos end up reflecting that. Exploring or doing something during a family photoshoot is a fun way to take the pressure off ‘family pictures’.
Here are some of my favourite ideas for fun, natural family photography in and around Melbourne.
1. Melbourne’s Laneways and City Spaces
The city works beautifully for families who want variety. You can walk along the Yarra River past Federation Square, cross the bridges between Flinders Street Station and Southbank. The Exhibition Gardens by the museum offer tall trees, open paths and architectural character right in the heart of Melbourne. Plus the Melbourne Museum has bright colours a skate area and plenty for kids to climb which can keep things light and fun.
Your session could always include a quick stop for ice-cream (there are some really cute spots in Brunswick/Lygon St) this will feel less like a photoshoot and more like a relaxed day out in Melbourne.
2. Brighton Beach Boxes
These are a Melbourne icon for a reason. If you’re searching for family photography by the beach in Melbourne, this spot delivers colour, space and ease. The beach works well just before sunset when the light is soft and less glarey. Bring a towel, grab some fish and chips, stay for sunset!
If you prefer fewer people, smaller stretches like Beaumaris or Black Rock have beach boxes too. The coastal path and steps add variety for walking shots or photos by the dunes. Families who love colour and space usually fall in love with this look. Some areas along here also allow you to bring your dog at certain times of the year.
3. Bushland and River Parks Close to the City
For families who feel more at home surrounded by trees than skyscrapers, Melbourne’s inner bushland is perfect for natural family photos. Darebin Parklands, Yarra Bend Park and Westerfolds all have open trails, native plants, trees to climb, creeks and the occasional kanagroo or Bluey style creek to play barky boats.
These places work well for families with younger kids or dogs because there’s freedom to move and explore.
4. Local Streets with Character
Sometimes you don’t need to travel at all. Your own neighbourhood, or a nearby street, can be just as photogenic as anywhere else. Melbourne’s suburbs are full of picket fences, fun cobbles, ivy-covered brick, and leafy canopies. I LOVE a session like this.
These sessions tend to feel easy because you already know the place. You can pop back inside for outfit changes, grab a snack for the kids, or pause for a rest. Local streets also hold meaning: that front path you’ve walked a hundred times, the corner your kids always race to. Photos in those familiar spaces often feel the most real years later.
If you aren’t a city dweller, don’t discount this idea too. There’s something to be said for exploring your city.
5. At Home, Just As You Are BUT doing stuff
If you want photos that tell your story exactly as it is, home is the best backdrop. The morning light in your kitchen, kids reading on the couch, the dog claiming his spot, feeding the chickens, a kick of the footy or a backyard campfire these moments are as much a part of your family as any location.
In-home sessions work well for newborns, winter months, or anyone who prefers slow mornings over big outings. Your home doesn’t need to be spotless or styled. It just needs you in it.
What you get is less “posed portrait” and more a gentle record of life as it’s unfolding. You can look back years later and still remember what it felt like. We can also use your outsides spaces or wander locally.
6. Local Favourites and FUN extras – Ice-cream? Bookshops?
Think family outing! Your shoot could involve getting ice-cream, fish and chips on the beach, a picnic or a stop to a local cafe or bookshop.
Brunswick, Northcote and Fitzroy are full of great backdrops for this kind of thing. Gelaterias with bright tiles, cosy bookshops with texture and story, and friendly cafés with outdoor tables that catch the afternoon light all work beautifully. But your local milkbar is also worth considering! Give the kids some coins and see what happens!
7. Suburban Bush Tracks and Tree-Lined Streets
Melbourne’s outer suburbs hide so many underrated gems. Local reserves, creeks, and tree-lined streets come alive with changing light. Even a short walk through Warrandyte, Montmorency or Eltham gives that mix of greenery and suburbia that feels quietly Australian. I’ve discovered beautiful but unexpected spots like in a green wedge along a freeway area. Don’t discount the outer burbs!
These are the locations where families can bring a picnic rug, wander, and let the session unfold naturally. You can smell the eucalyptus, hear the birds, and watch the light shift as the sun drops. It’s simple, but it works.
8. Seasonal Sessions
There’s a certain kind of magic that comes from working with the seasons. Autumn’s crunchy leaves to run through, the soft brightness of spring, and the late light of summer evenings each bring their own tone and energy.
You don’t need to wait for a milestone or special occasion. Choosing a season you love can give your photos a natural anchor. In Melbourne, light changes fast, so if you’ve been thinking “one day,” pick a time of year that is your favourite.
Making it Easy
The best sessions are the ones that feel like time together, not a performance. Kids can move, parents can relax and there’s no pressure to get everything perfect. You don’t need props or matching outfits, just clothes you feel good in and a willingness to laugh through the chaos.
All of these locations are fun, easy to reach and full of life. There’s space to explore, time to pause and light that does most of the work for us. The result is a set of photos that look and feel like your family, right here in Melbourne.

FAQs About Family Photography in Melbourne
How do I choose the best location for our family photos?
Think about what feels most like your family. Some people love the energy of the city, others prefer trees, beaches or familiar local spots. I can suggest options based on how your kids like to spend time, walking, exploring, or playing near water OR you could consider a family outing like going to get ice-cream or a picnic in the park with a kite.
What time of day is best for family photography near Melbourne?
The best light is usually early morning or late afternoon. If you have younger kids who are happier in the morning, that can be a perfect time to start. I’ll guide you on timing when we plan your session so the light works for your chosen location.
What should we wear for family photos?
Keep it simple and comfortable. Choose clothes you can move in and colours that feel like you. Neutrals, soft tones or a mix of earthy shades always photograph well. Avoid anything with large logos or busy prints that might pull focus. The most important thing is that you all feel like yourselves. I have a helpful post about what to wear over here.
How long does a typical family session last?
Most sessions run for about an hour. That’s long enough for everyone to settle in and forget about the camera, but short enough that kids stay engaged. If we need a little extra time to explore or stop for a snack, there’s always flexibility.
Can we include our dog or extended family?
Absolutely. Pets are part of the family and are always welcome. Extended family sessions can be arranged too, we’ll just choose a location with enough space for everyone and plan the session so it flows naturally.
Do you travel outside Melbourne for family sessions?
Yes. While most of my work is around Melbourne and the eastern suburbs, I often travel for families who love a particular beach, bushland area or country town. Travel fees are included if it’s within an hour of 3138. Just mention where you’d like to go and I can let you know what’s possible.
How soon will we receive our photos?
Your gallery is usually ready within two to three weeks. You’ll receive an online collection where you can view, download and order prints directly. If you’re planning ahead for gifting or a particular season, I can always confirm timing before we book.
