Those first few weeks have a beautiful uniqueness to them that doesn’t last. The particular weight of a sleeping newborn, the way your house feels different, a strange mix of exhaustion and wonder. Most families want photos from this time. What they don’t want is a session that makes an already full-on time feel harder than it needs to be.

I’m Bec, a newborn photographer in Melbourne with fifteen years of experience helping families feel comfortable in front of a camera. My sessions happen in your home, at your pace, with your baby doing exactly what babies do. I bring the calm. You just need to show up.

Newborn photography sessions take place in your home and unfold naturally, without props or complicated setups. From the moment you contact me to receiving your photos, here’s how it works.

When should I book a newborn photographer in Melbourne?

Booking before your baby arrives is ideal, it means I can hold a spot around your due date with room to move either way. Once you’re in my calendar, I wait for your news. Already had your baby? Still worth reaching out.

Your baby is here!

Around one to two weeks is a lovely time for newborn photos, though sessions work at any stage — from those early sleepy days through to the chunky rolls and smiles at eight or nine months. What matters most is that you feel ready. Have a read here of what the best age is for a newborn session.

Getting ready for your session

It’s designed to make things feel easy and help you understand how I work. I’m here to answer any questions in the lead up.

On the Day

I come to you, usually in the morning. If the night was rough or something comes up, we can reschedule — no stress. I’ll offer gentle guidance throughout, but your baby can just keep doing what babies do: feeding, sleeping, crying, cuddling. Siblings are always welcome.

Receiving your photos

Your gallery will be ready within two weeks. You’ll receive a private online link to download all your high-resolution images. From there: print, share, keep them forever.

Prints & Albums

If you’d like to make something tangible, you can order prints, albums and frames directly through your gallery. Everything is printed professionally and delivered to your door.

Newborn Package Options

As a newborn photographer I believe an image of your baby in your arms, wrapped in the blanket your mum knitted, will always mean more than anything I could bring in a prop bag.

Getting out of the house with a new baby is a lot. So I come to you.

In-home sessions mean everything you need is already there, your feeding chair, your blankets, your other kids, your dog. The images we make reflect the actual shape of your family’s life, not a studio version of it.

Your home doesn’t need to be clean or fancy. I live in an 80s brick house with three kids. I know what real homes look like, and I know how to find good light in them. All I need is a window, a wall, or a doorway. If the weather’s kind I’ll often include a few frames outside around your house too.

Yes. All my newborn sessions take place in your home. I travel to families across Melbourne metro and surrounding areas, up to an hour from 3138. In-home sessions mean your baby stays in a familiar environment, everything you need is already there, and you don’t have to pack a bag.

The earlier the better — ideally during your second trimester. I hold a spot around your due date with flexibility either way, so if your baby arrives early or late we can adjust. If you’ve already had your baby, it’s still worth getting in touch.

One to two weeks is ideal for that sleepy, curled-up newborn look. That said, sessions work beautifully at any stage, from the first few weeks through to eight or nine months when the personality and chunky rolls really come through. There’s no wrong time.

Yes, siblings and well-behaved pets are always welcome. My sessions are family sessions first, parents and siblings are included as a matter of course, not an add-on.

That’s completely normal and completely fine. Sessions are flexible and baby-led. We feed, we settle, we wait. There’s no rush and no expectation that your baby performs. The real moments happen in between anyway.

No props, no complicated posing. I do some solo shots of your baby but the focus is on your family together, naturally. If you’re after a more styled, studio-based session I’m happy to recommend some Melbourne photographers who do that beautifully.

Simplicity is wonderful. I want the focus to be on your baby and your connection together. But I also want you to feel like yourselves – if you are someone who wears bright colours – wear bright colours!

My newborn photography sessions start at $1,250, which includes all high-resolution images (80+), a private online gallery, a curated slideshow and a $200 print credit. A $300 booking fee secures your date, with the balance due a week before your session. Flexible payment plans are available on request.

During a newborn session, the focus is primarily on capturing your baby and immediate family as your family unit. However, if your parents happen to be staying with you, we can certainly take a few images with them. Please note that this isn’t an extended group session, as that involves very different logistics and can completely change the feel of your session. If you’re interested in a session specifically tailored for extended family, you can book one here.

Yes! All sessions have access through your gallery to some high quality print labs – they ship directly to your door. And it’s very easy to visualise your images in different frames or on products such as calendars or cards. I also offer OnStone prints (oh my golly they’re so lovely!) and some other fun bits and pieces. 

If you have a printer you use, you are absolutely welcome to take your images to them – please ensure a human is involved and avoid those cheap online print places and kiosk printing machines as your colours will almost certainly suffer. (If you’re making a print for your three year old to enjoy, definitely just go to Officeworks!)

I photograph families all across Melbourne, especially in the eastern and inner-northern suburbs, areas like Kew, Camberwell, Brunswick, Fitzroy, Northcote, and Ivanhoe, through to Warrandyte, Ringwood, Eltham, and the Yarra Valley.
I often travel to homes in Templestowe, Box Hill, Surrey Hills, and Mont Albert, and love working in creative pockets like Thornbury, Clifton Hill and Collingwood.

I work in partnership with The Birth Photography Collective, where you can request me as your primary photographer. Booking through the Collective provides access to reliable backup photographers—essential for the unpredictable, on-call nature of birth photography. It’s a bit like having a team of midwives, ensuring someone will be there to capture your birth.

Birth photography is incredibly meaningful to me, and I’d be excited to be part of your experience if the timing and location work. I often photograph births at The Angliss Hospital, Box Hill Hospital, Mercy Hospital, or home births.

Please note, I do not personally photograph free births under any circumstances.
