Bringing a baby home is rather a lot, without adding the stress of packing them up for a studio newborn session shortly after getting home from the hospital. Aside from the ease, the other reason that I love in-home newborn sessions is that your home is a part of your family story. This is the place where your baby will have SO many firsts, this is the place you’ll spend lots of sleepless hours together and the place you’ll make lots of memories as a family.
Sessions at home are easier, calmer and much more flexible. They’re also about the whole family, not just the baby. Years from now, your kids will want to see you in the photos too, the way you held them, the way their big brother peeked over your shoulder, even the dog sitting hopefully at your feet (a wee bit put out that there is a new human taking all the attention).
If you’re looking for a newborn photographer in Melbourne who works around your real life, you’re in the right place.
Why In-Home Sessions Are Easier Than Studio Photos
Leaving the house with a newborn can feel like an expedition. There’s the nappy bag to pack, the car seat to wrangle, clothes that may or may not survive the trip. Then there’s driving with a new baby in a car – which can be a bit of a stress.
An in-home session takes all of that away. You don’t have to go anywhere. If your baby needs a feed, you’re already in the best place for it. If they need a change, everything is on hand. If you need a cup of tea, the kettle is right there. It’s simply easier, and that’s exactly what parents need in the early weeks.
I offer in-home newborn photography across Melbourne, so you don’t need to travel anywhere in those early weeks.
Don’t Worry About the House
This is the number one thing people worry about, and honestly, please don’t. You don’t need a spotless, Pinterest-worthy home for beautiful photos. I’m not here to judge your dishes or laundry piles, I have three children and my house is very lived in. I’ll have a look, and find the little pockets that work best. I’m experienced at working in small areas and knowing when it’s appropriate to include some of those life things, tiny socks on the washing line is after all, quite cute.
In terms of the spaces I often use – Sometimes that’s your bed (if you are happy to use this space, think about what bed cover you’d like in your photos – use what you have and love!), sometimes it’s your couch, sometimes it’s the floor in the nursery. A doorway, a window, or your backyard. I’ll shuffle a chair if I need to, but you don’t have to deep clean or move things around (You’ve just had a baby, no cleaning – if you really want this done, the only way you should be doing this is outsourcing this task to an enthusiastic new grandparent so you can reap the benefits of it having been done for you for later on!). Your job is to just be with your baby.
What to Wear for Newborn Photos at Home
The best outfits are the ones you feel comfortable in. Think about what you’d wear on a relaxed weekend at home. Neutrals always look great, but so do colours and patterns. The only real tip is to avoid wearing the same shade as your baby, otherwise, you risk blending together.

Feeding, Breaks and Everything In Between
Newborns are on their own schedule; don’t feel like you need to change anything for photos. It can be helpful to feed before a session as your baby will often be more calm, but don’t break your routine to make it happen. If they’re hungry in the middle of the session, we stop and feed. Breaks are part of the process. Crying can be part of the process too, I’ve seen it all, it wont faze me.
“Thank you so much for our beautiful photos. You’ve captured our family of three so lovingly – moments of calm and tears and everything in between. Thank you also for being such a lovely presence during this wonderful, but tumultuous period. ”
Whether you’re breastfeeding or bottle feeding, you can decide if you’d like that photographed. Some parents love having it as part of their gallery, others prefer to keep it private. Both are perfectly fine. And yes, burping, nappy changes and the occasional outfit swap are all completely normal.
How a Newborn Photographer in Melbourne Approaches Timing
I usually suggest mornings for newborn sessions because babies tend to be a little calmer. But the truth is, the session runs at your baby’s pace. If they need time to settle, we take it. If they want to be awake that’s fine. If they want to nap on you for most of the session, that’s okay too.
The goal isn’t to tick off a list of poses. It’s to show what your life looks like right now, cuddles, chaos, calm and everything in between.
Why the Whole Family Should Be in the Photos
A newborn session isn’t just about the baby. Including siblings, parents and even pets tells the bigger story of your family. Older kids don’t have to sit still or smile on cue. The best photos often happen when they wander in for a cuddle and wander straight back out again.
Pets are welcome too. A dog jumping onto the bed or a cat weaving around you is part of the family picture.
And parents: you matter. Your baby won’t remember being this small, but they’ll look back at these photos one day and want to see you there. Not just them on their own, but you holding them, laughing with them, showing exactly how loved they were from the start. This is a massive life shift of your own and one worth documenting.
Your Role in an In-Home Session
There’s no script, and no performance required. Your only job is to be present with your baby. I’ll give a bit of gentle direction as needed, but the best photos come from the natural things you’re already doing, holding them, settling them, watching them sleep.
I’ll be watching for details and your unique interactions. The way tiny toes curl against your arm, the way siblings peek curiously before running off, the way you lean in close or smell your baby’s hair without even thinking about it. These things are what make the photos feel like you, and my deepest goal is to represent you honestly in a beautiful way.
After Your Session
Once I leave, you don’t need to do anything. I’ll head home, back up your images and get to work. And soon you’ll have your gallery full of your beautiful new family together, moments and details.
Printing Your Photos
Once your gallery is ready, you’ll also have the option to order prints or albums so your photos don’t end up forgotten on a hard drive. I’ve set up a simple system that makes it quick and easy for you, because let’s be honest: in the newborn haze, the last thing you need is another admin task on your to-do list.
Inside your gallery, you can choose your favourites and order directly. No downloading files, no fiddling with crop marks, no scrolling through discount lab websites at 2am or sitting at a Kmart kiosk machine just for crappy results. The lab I work with produces professional-quality prints and albums that will last, and everything arrives at your door.
Albums are especially popular with newborn sessions, because they tell the whole story in one place: tiny fingers, big yawns, siblings peeking in, the whole family together. I offer a done-for-you album as an option when you book a newborn session.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does an in-home newborn session take?
Usually around an hour to an hour and a half, but the timing is flexible. We stop for feeds, changes and breaks whenever needed. There’s no pressure to keep your baby “on schedule,” and if it takes a bit longer, that’s totally fine.
Do I need to clean my house before the session?
Absolutely not. I’ll find the spots that work best, and you only need to clear a little space if you want to. Toys on the floor and washing in the corner won’t stop us from creating beautiful photos.
What if my baby cries the whole time?
Crying is normal. Breaks for feeding, rocking and settling are part of the session. Some of the most meaningful photos happen in those in-between moments.
Can you photograph feeding?
Yes, if you’d like me to. Both bottle and breastfeeding can make for beautiful, natural photos. If you’d rather keep that private, that’s completely fine too.
What should we wear?
Comfortable clothes you feel good in. Try not to wear the same colour as your baby so you don’t blend together. For more ideas, see my guide on what to wear for newborn photos.
