If you are sitting on the couch, baby in arms, wondering if you missed your chance for newborn photos, you are not the first. Parents often tell me that booking a session somehow slipped their mind. Between the blur of pregnancy appointments, packing a hospital bag, and then actually bringing a baby home, it’s not surprising. Then later comes, your baby is here, and you suddenly realise you would love photos but have no idea if it is too late.
Here is the good news: it is not too late. With in-home newborn photography in Melbourne, there is a lot more flexibility than the old advice about “the two-week window” makes it seem. You do not need a studio, you do not need to rush, and you do not need to stress if your baby is not brand new anymore. Every stage has its own kind of beauty.
Why Newborn Photography in Melbourne Works at Any Age
Studio photography is usually about posing. Babies are placed into certain positions, often while they are very new and very sleepy. To make that work, families are encouraged to book before their baby is even born and arrive in the first 5 to 14 days. That approach produces a particular type of perfect image (Not everyone’s cup of tea!), but it is also very limiting if life has gotten in the way or you prefer something a bit more real and natural for your newborn photos.
Because I work only in-home, I am not tied to a narrow window. In-home newborn photography is about your family in your own space. This makes the timing far more flexible. Whether your baby is 2 weeks, 2 months, or even closer to 6 months, we can still create a gallery of images that reflect this stage of your life.
1 to 2 Weeks: The Classic Sleepy Newborn Look
When people ask about the “best age for newborn photos,” this is usually what they mean. In the first fortnight, babies tend to be sleepier and easier to settle. They still curl up naturally, and they are often more content to be wrapped. At this stage, your photos will often feel quiet, calm, and still. These photos will show just how small your baby is.
In-home sessions at 1 to 2 weeks old often focus on the intimacy of those first days. Your baby tucked against your chest, tiny details of their hands and feet, the way they fit into your arms so snugly.
Around 3 Months: Expressions and Connection
By three months, babies are more awake, alert, and interactive. They start to make eye contact, hold your gaze, and even smile. Parents often worry that they “missed the newborn window,” but at this age you are gaining something different.
Your gallery will show personality. Photos of your baby watching you, smiling, maybe even laughing, are often the ones families look back on and say, “That was when they really started to look like themselves.” There may not be as many of those sleepy images, but you do get a richness of expression and more obvious interaction.
Some parents prefer this stage because you are much more settled at home, you know your baby better, and everyone is just that little bit more comfortable.
6-9 Months: Chunky, Playful, and Full of Character
By the time babies hit six months, they have grown into their own little selves. They may be sitting with support, grabbing at toys, giggling, and showing off their personality. This is not a traditional “newborn” session anymore, but it is one of my favourite ages to photograph. (Anyone say baby rolls?)
Think chubby cheeks, gummy grins, the way they reach out for you or roll across the floor. The photos are full of energy and joy. Parents often say they are glad they waited because the images feel alive, not staged.
Is There Really a “Best” Age for Newborn Photos?
The truth is, the best age depends on what you want. If you are hoping for very sleepy, tiny baby photos, the first two weeks is ideal. For connection, smiles and personality, waiting until three months has its own charm. Then if you want a chunky, playful baby with obvious character, later is fantastic.
Every stage has its own value. Your baby will never be this small again, whether one week or six months, and those moments are worth keeping.
What If I Forgot to Book Before Birth?
This happens more than you think. Parents find themselves googling “is it too late for newborn photos” when their baby is already a few weeks or months old. The answer is no, it is not too late. I often fit in last-minute sessions for families across Melbourne, and the results are just as meaningful as the early ones.
If your baby is already here, reach out. I keep my process easy:
- Let me know you’re interested and if you’d like now or to wait a little longer for a certain baby stage.
- I send through an easy booking calendar to help find a morning that works.
- I come to your home, we keep it relaxed, and we go at your baby’s pace.
- A few weeks later, you get your gallery ready to enjoy.
- Simple, practical, no stress. Exactly what time-poor parents need.
Printing and Displaying Your Photos Made Easy
Once your gallery is ready, you will also have the option to order prints or albums so your images do not just sit on a hard drive. I know you are sleep-deprived, so I have set up a system that is straightforward. You select your favourites inside your gallery, click order, and they arrive at your door. No downloading (only to reupload elsewhere), no fiddling with cheap online labs, no 2am “I’ll do this later” tabs that never get done. Easy.

FAQ – Best Age for Newborn Photos in Melbourne
Is 4 weeks too late for newborn photos?
No. Four weeks simply means your baby is more alert. The photos will look different, but they will still be beautiful. Sometimes, around the 3-week mark babies will have a brief patch of baby acne, which will usually disappear in a few days.
Do I have to book before the baby is born?
No, you can (I pencil you in under your due date and wait for your news), but if you’ve forgotten, I can often accommodate last-minute weekday sessions for families who reach out after their baby has arrived.
What age is best if I want sleepy newborn photos?
One to two weeks is best if you are hoping for that soft, sleepy look.
What age is best if I want smiles and eye contact?
From three months is wonderful. Babies are more awake, expressive, and engaging.
Can I wait until six months?
Yes. At this stage, you are really seeing your baby’s milestones. Sitting, smiling, reaching for you. It is less “newborn” but still a perfect stage to capture. I think around 8 months is perfect for peak baby rolls if you have a chunky baby!
