One of the most common questions parents ask before booking newborn photos: What if my baby won’t sleep for their newborn photos.
Usually, it’s asked with a bit of a nervous laugh.
- What if the baby cries the whole time?
- What if they refuse to sleep?
- What if the session is a disaster?
The short answer is that my newborn sessions don’t rely on “perfect” babies.
Babies do baby things. They wake up, stretch, feed, cry, settle, and occasionally fall asleep right when you least expect it.
Do newborn babies need to sleep for photos?
No.
Sleepy newborn photos are lovely, but they are only one small part of what a newborn session can look like.
Awake babies can be just as beautiful to photograph.
You might see:
tiny stretches wide curious eyes a little yawn a baby gripping a parent’s finger
Those moments are often just as meaningful later as the sleepy curled-up photos people imagine when they first think about newborn photography.
What awake newborn photos actually look like
Most babies spend at least part of the session awake.
That usually means more interaction with parents.
Parents holding their baby near a window.
A baby staring you down intently.
A quiet cuddle on the couch.
These photos often end up feeling very natural because they look like real moments rather than carefully arranged poses.
Some of my favourite newborn photos involve babies who were completely awake.
What happens if the baby cries
Crying is normal.
Newborns are adjusting to the world and sometimes they need feeding, settling, or simply a cuddle. Crying is communication.
Parents feed the baby, change a nappy, or settle them however they normally would. Once things feel calm again we continue. OR in the very rare case they cry the whole session (once in 15 years guys – and the parents let me know their baby cried for 3months straight) I still find ways to keep things working (ps. they loved their images).
This is one of the reasons I photograph my newborn sessions in family homes across Melbourne. Babies tend to settle much more easily in their own environment.
Everything they need is already there.
Why in-home newborn sessions help
When sessions happen at home there is no rush.
You don’t have to pack bags, drive somewhere, and hope the baby behaves in an unfamiliar space.
You’re already in the place where your baby sleeps, feeds, and spends most of their time.
That makes it easier to pause when needed and keep the session relaxed.
If you’re curious what a typical session actually looks like, I’ve written more about in-home newborn photography in Melbourne as well.
A few simple things that can help before the session
Babies will do their own thing, but a few small things can make the session feel smoother.
- Feeding the baby shortly before the session often helps them feel settled.
- Keeping the house comfortably warm can make babies more relaxed.
- And probably the most helpful thing is simply not putting too much pressure on the session or yourselves, babies (and their older toddler siblings) pickup on stress. This is an experience to enjoy.
The goal is not a perfectly behaved baby. The goal is a small window of time that reflects what life with a newborn actually feels like.
The reality of newborn photos
When parents imagine newborn photography they often picture a perfectly sleeping baby for an hour straight.
Real newborn sessions are a little more relaxed than that.
There might be a feed halfway through.
A toddler climbing (or maybe even jumping) on the bed.
A baby deciding that sleep is overrated.
Beautiful photographs can still happen, often because of these things.
“When it came to our newborn photos, they are just perfect. She got every precious moment. Our favourites though are the photos she took of us comforting our crying newborn and love them more than the ones where he is calm and perfect, because newborns cry and its such a fleeting time, you want to remember every special part.”
Thinking about newborn photos in Melbourne?
Most families organise newborn photography while they are still pregnant.
I pencil sessions in around your due date, and once the baby arrives and you’re home and feeling ready we find a morning that works.
I photograph relaxed newborn sessions for families across Melbourne, usually in their own homes where things feel comfortable and familiar.
If you’re thinking about organising newborn photos, you can read more about my approach as a Melbourne newborn photographer or get in touch and we can chat about how it works. I’d absolutely love to photograph this new iteration of your family.
Common questions about newborn sessions
Do newborn photos only work if the baby sleeps?
No. Sleepy photos are lovely but awake moments can be just as (sometimes even more) beautiful.
What if my baby cries during the session?
That’s completely normal. We simply pause, settle the baby, and continue once things feel calm again.
Can older siblings be involved?
Yes. Older kids usually pop in and out during the session which works well. The goal is short moments rather than perfectly posed photos.
When should I book newborn photography?
Most families book while they are pregnant. I pencil sessions around your due date and confirm the exact timing once the baby arrives.
