I thought it would be fun to share an interview with my daughter about what it’s like having a photographer mum. As someone who spends her life surrounded by family photography, she has her own take on the upsides (and annoyances) of having a camera around. ALL THE TIME.
Celeste is probably my most outwardly creative child. I’d love to collaborate more with her. We’ve done a few planned photos, particularly featuring her love of Anne of Green Gables (of which she also had a birthday party planned around one year). Her notes on ‘correcting my grammar’ are correct, but this is also a bit of a recent fixation as I’ve been letting her help me write my posts! Super fun involving her in what I do, she has excellent ideas and really can write extremely well.
Life as a Photographer’s Daughter
As a photographer’s daughter, I’ve discovered many of my interests through my mum’s job. For example, my creativity is solely mine, but my eye for colour was made by checking over mum’s computer as a five-year-old. Now that I’m older, I can actually help, and that might be just correcting the grammar of other blogs she posts, but that’s something that keeps me occupied and works, because mum can just focus on writing.
What do you think I do all day when I say I’m “editing”?
When you say you’re “editing”, I think that means you’re on your computer, making photos brighter, darker, less colourful, more colourful or eye-catching in a particular spot, which makes you look at something or someone.
How do you feel when I bring my camera out at home?
Honestly, when you bring your camera out at home, I feel kind of exasperated. Maybe you’re taking a photo of a beautiful sunset, which is fine, but I prefer it to be limited to special occasions only.
Do you think I take too many photos of you, not enough, or just the right amount?
To many, but like I said earlier, it’s fine when it is something big.
What’s the best part about having a photographer mum?
The best part of having a photographer as a mum is that I always have photos of memories from when I was little.
What’s the most annoying part about being a photographer’s daughter?
When I’m relaxing in the holidays, mum will come up to me and say, “The light is so nice in your room, can I take photos of you?” and she won’t let me say no.
Do you think other kids have as many photos of themselves as you do?
No, but other kids’ parents aren’t photographers.
What kinds of photos do you like looking back on?
Mum makes albums of pictures and funny things we said when we were little, so that’s always fun to look at!
What would you tell people about what it’s like to have a photographer mum?
I’d say it’s like having a mum with any other job but one who always carries a camera when “The light is so nice.”
What’s your best creative outlet?
I like writing poems and narratives.
How do you think my job helps the world?
It helps people remember stages of their life, and it can help connect families by looking back at the pictures.
Thanks Céleste!
