Melbourne Family, Newborn & Wedding Photographer
Photos made easy for people who don’t like being photographed.
If you want beautiful photos of your family but don’t love being photographed, you’re not alone.
Almost every family I photograph says the same thing before they book:
“We want photos… we just don’t love being photographed.”
I’m Bec, a Melbourne family photographer who keeps the process relaxed and simple so you can feel comfortable and end up with natural, beautiful photos.
After fifteen years of photographing families across Melbourne and Victoria, I know the best photographs happen when people feel relaxed enough to simply be themselves.
Nothing overly styled. Nothing staged. No awkward posing.
Just real family life.

“I really don’t like having photos and the idea of getting them done gives me anxiety, but I absolutely LOVE these. The way you captured us makes none of that matter. We look so happy and real.”
“You are truly astonishing at capturing beautiful moments of joy that no one else would notice. We have never seen a photographer so gifted in knowing how and when to capture those moments.”
I make photos easy for people who don’t like being photographed.
Let’s be honest. Being photographed can feel a bit weird. You might worry the kids won’t cooperate. Or that the whole thing will feel staged. Or that someone in the family really doesn’t want to be there.
My job as a Melbourne family photographer is to take that pressure away so the session feels relaxed and natural from start to finish. I keep things simple, give a little guidance when needed, and let real life unfold.
When people feel comfortable, photos feel natural and real.
The way they should be.

Hey, I’m Bec Matheson, a family, wedding and newborn photographer in Melbourne (Naarm).
I’m based in Melbourne’s outer east but travel across the city and Victoria for sessions, just ask if you have somewhere in mind!
With over 15 years’ experience, I know that “family” means many things. Every culture, gender, and family structure is welcome here, whether that’s a big lively crew or just you and your dog.
Accessibility matters to me too. Having neurodivergent kids is a lived experience in my own family, and I’m always happy to adjust sessions so everyone feels comfortable and included. (You can read my full inclusion statement here.) (See my full inclusion statement here).
I’m a friendly, slightly nerdy introvert who’s great at working with people who feel a little awkward in front of the camera. Lots of my families come back again and again, some are up to seven sessions and counting, and honestly, it’s the best part of my job.
And please, don’t think your kids have to be tiny babies to be photographed. Every stage of life is worth documenting. From newborns to teens, and right through to octogenarian grandparents, I love photographing across the full spectrum of family life.
If you like what you see, booking is straightforward and you can check my pricing online too.
“Such an easy and wonderful experience. Bec made us feel so relaxed and at ease.”
What to Wear for Your Family Photos: Real Tips for Real Families
“Oh Bec I’m crying!! They are the most beautiful photos I have ever seen! I love them all so much. I love the smiles, the light in the trees, the foot in the window, the ones with all of us, the ones of just the kids, all of them! You have captured their little personalities so perfectly. Honestly the best photographer we have ever, ever had. Much love.”
Every year, I set myself a goal: one photo each week of my kids.
I don’t always hit every week (sometimes it’s more like monthly!!) but that’s not the point, it’s about building a habit. In photography circles, this is called a 52 project, and for me, it’s a way to see our everyday life with fresh eyes. Regular photos are a gift to myself and my kids as they grow and change. As a Melbourne family photographer this helps me too in looking at everyday moments with fresh eyes.
I’m a big believer in documenting your kids, even if it’s just with your phone. Follow along on Instagram for reminders to capture your own everyday moments, plus ideas on how to use, print and display your photos at home.
“I am utterly speechless! You are so gifted, these are beyond beautiful. We have watched the slideshow about a thousand times. Everyone I’ve sent it to has cried. I am so happy!! Thank you so much – thank you for capturing us so perfectly, we will treasure these forever.”
