Neurodivergent friendly photography Melbourne

Inclusion and Diversity Statement

Family of four one child with a disability in wheelchair

I am a Neurodivergent Friendly Photographer BAsed in Melbourne, Australia

It’s my intention to promote diversity and inclusion in my public images. As a white, middle-class, heterosexual and cisgender woman, I’m aware of my privilege and hope that I don’t take it for granted. But of course I’m still learning. If you have any feedback regarding accessibility and inclusion, I’m happy to hear it. My pronouns are she/her.

I offer inclusive and neurodivergent friendly photography in Melbourne. My aim for photography sessions is that everyone feels welcome, included and safe.

  • First Nations people are welcome. I recognise the Wurundjeri people as the traditional owners of the lands on which I live and work, and acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded.
  • Neurodiverse people are welcome. I have lived experience as a parent of neurodivergent children and understand that a photo session can feel overwhelming in ways that aren’t always visible. Neurodivergent friendly photography is important!
  • People of colour and people of all cultures and faiths are welcome.
  • People of all genders are welcome.
  • Members of the LGBTQIA+ community are welcome.
  • People with disabilities are welcome, and I commit to working with people with disabilities, visible or invisible, to accommodate access needs.
  • People of all sizes are welcome. I’m committed to promoting body positivity and diversity.
  • People of any age are welcome. I celebrate life at all stages.
  • People with sensory needs are welcome.
  • Families of all kinds are welcome. A large group of multiple generations with several children and grandchildren is a family, and a couple with no children is absolutely one too. A group of friends can be a family, and so can a single person – alone or with their children or pets.*

Statement of Ethics

Dignity & Privacy

I strive to represent people with care and integrity. By educating myself about the contexts and subjects I photograph, I ensure that my images respect and uphold the dignity of every individual. I commit to respecting privacy requests for any reason and to actively engage in conversations about where and how my images are shown.

Responsibility

I aim to make a positive impact through my photography. By reflecting on the potential effects on individuals and society, I recognise the power of photography and commit to using it responsibly. This includes talking with my corporate clients about their diversity and inclusion practices and choosing to work with clients whose values align with these practices.

Environment

I carefully consider the environmental implications of my choices, including the equipment and processes I use. I consider the location that I photograph, which may have cultural implications for First Nations people, and also the safety of my clients and the natural environment.

Editing Practices and AI Usage

While I utilise editing and AI for technical adjustments such as colour, I promise not to alter the natural features of my subjects beyond surface/transient scratches or sores. Practices such as excessive airbrushing, altering skin tones, or changing body shapes are not part of my work. I commit to representing skin and skin tone accurately. I commit to being mindful of how I utilise AI in my work (for example, using locally based AI tools not environmentally impactful cloud-based), and to not alter anything significant about a person in my work.

Representation

I am committed to representing a diverse range of people in my work. This includes various genders, sexualities, ethnicities, skin tones, body types, physical abilities, and financial backgrounds. My latest work can be found on my Instagram.

Accountability

I acknowledge that a lived experience of a statement such as this one is a continuous learning process. When mistakes occur, I respond with humility and vulnerability, striving to improve and learn from each experience. Each session is an opportunity to critically examine my motivations, methods, and impact. I treat everyone involved with respect and kindness.

*I will happily do sessions with families large or small – but please note larger groups of extended families will be priced differently due to the additional time required. Full pricing details are here. Please be aware that some locations are not suitable for pets.

Neurodivergent friendly photography for families in Melbourne

I have lived experience as both a parent of neurodivergent children and as a neurodivergent person myself. I understand how overwhelming a photo session can feel, both for kids and for adults. All families deserve great photography, and I aim to make that possible if your family includes people who are autistic, have ADHD, or experience anxiety or sensory sensitivities.

I offer neurodivergent friendly photography sessions designed to be flexible, gentle, and responsive to your family’s needs. This begins well before I pick up the camera. I take time to understand what works for your family, whether that’s through email, voice messages, or anything else that helps you communicate clearly and comfortably (because, quite frankly we all know many of us hate the phone!).

We’ll choose a time and location that suits your crew, whether that’s a quiet park, your own home, or anywhere your child feels settled. Sessions are unhurried, with room to pause, regroup, or change direction as needed. There’s no pressure to perform or behave a certain way, just space to be yourselves. Behind the scenes, I work efficiently so that sessions aren’t overwhelmingly long or difficult.

I truly value open communication in the lead-up and am happy to adapt wherever I can.

Babies being babies! Unsettled babies during new Babies being babies!

Unsettled babies during newborn sessions do not phase me. We are there to document life as it is and sometimes the reality of newborn photos isn’t sleepy perfection. I have many tricks and ways of photographing babies - being held, being fed, being settled. Eyes open, eyes shut. The calm and snuggly, the peaceful and the not so much. Your photos will still be beautiful.

Their reception was a great big party with an excess of DIY from these creative souls, hand illustrated playing cards (each one different), pub trivia, arcade machines and lots of colour!

Congratulations @horriblehorris @peterwillpopp ❤️👀❤️ loved being a part of your wedding so much!

You can’t be mad at the dog 😉
