Melbourne family, newborn, wedding and brand photographer

Hey! I’m Bec Matheson, a Melbourne (Naarm) Photographer.

This beautiful image (and below) was taken by the brilliant Tanya Gray, top image by legendary Hugh Stewart

Do you feel awkward being photographed?

I’m Bec Matheson, Melbourne photographer (she/her). I am an introvert, I totally get it. But with more than 15 years’ experience, I’ve developed a knack for helping people feel at ease when there is a camera around. Here’s some of what I do:

  • Plan together. We talk about what you want, sort the how, what and where so everyone knows the plan.
  • Low-pressure for kids (and adults). Fun, calm sessions, no performing required, my main priority is for you to feel comfortable
  • Straightforward process. Simple steps that even reluctant partners can get behind, clear pricing and deliveries
  • Natural images. I can give you guidance but you wont be micromanaged, you will feel comfortable, no props or cheesy poses, lots of walking and finding the right spot to do the heavy lifting.
  • Meaningful locations. Home or a favourite spot that matters to your family, or a type of location that feels right.
  • Access adjustments. Tell me any sensory, mobility or communication needs, I can adapt timings, locations and adjust how we work to best suit what your need.
  • Experienced and trusted. 15+ years photographing in Melbourne; families rebook year after year, I’m also trusted by organisations like Purebaby, Village Cinemas and the Starlight Foundation.

I photograph real life. My editing style is clean and timeless with true-to-life colour and classic black and whites. I don’t really adhere to Instagram trends or brown-toned filters, nor do I use things like client wardrobess. Life is full of colour, your photos should be too.

Real life, real places

Inclusive

A bit about me…

I’m a flat white drinking, book-loving Melbournite, (these cliches I’ll happily lean in to), but I grew up overseas in the Pacific (Solomon Islands) – therefore will often miss pop culture references. My husband, Geoff, is a teacher and we have three daughters, Claire, Céleste and Maggie.

Being a parent is both fun and hard. Unsurprisingly, I take a lot of photos of my girls, it helps me notice things about their childhood. In amongst the chaos I try keep on top of a ‘52 project’ (a photo a week for a year), I’m a massive advocate for documenting your own lives and you can listen to me talking all things kid photos on the Mamatography podcast.

Reading widely makes me happy, and being a bit of a nerd I do love some cosy sci-fi (totally a genre). I’m also quite into survival reality shows (Alone, anyone?! ) camping holidays with family, dreaming up ideas for improving my very 1980’s house – sometimes doing them (don’t mind a bit of DIY) – and a more recent but somewhat tentative interest in gardening.

These values make what I do worthwhile

When I was 15, my family moved back to Australia from the Solomon Islands (An island in the Pacific where I grew up). Before we left, I took hundreds of photos to try to hold on to all the things of home – then our hard-drive failed. Everything gone.

Attention

Losing those pictures was difficult, but I learned something valuable: the process of making those images made me slow down and really pay attention. It solidifies memories. My appreciation for the beauty in everyday life hasn’t left me, (Although I’m genuinely quite thrilled when my kids are finally in bed!).

Connection

Back when I was a graphic designer, I was unexpectedly given the opportunity to go overseas to photograph for a non-profit. In Vietnam I met a little girl who no longer had to walk miles to collect water because the project had built a well in her village, she could now go to school. With my camera, I could share and celebrate this life-giving change. Photography connects people and makes change.

Celebration

So I became a photographer. I think a photo is kind of like the T.A.R.D.I.S. (I did say I was a nerd): it’s bigger on the inside. When an image gives you a clear glimpse of the beauty, complexity and connectedness of real life, I’ve done my job. Real life is worth celebrating at every stage—and turning that into something you can keep and come back to is a joy.

“Bec is the most brilliant, talented and generous family photographer. She’s also just a beautiful human being and makes any photography session so much fun, you’ll forget she even has a camera!
She has photographed our tiny family four times now and created the most precious and beautiful memories for us. She has a remarkable ability to capture the little in-between, secret moments that two people share and somehow crystallise it in one perfect, precious image. You won’t regret booking her for your family or newborn photos!”

I’ve done a few new things lately. I joined a frui I’ve done a few new things lately. I joined a fruit and veg co-op check out @boxdivvy guys they’re all over VIC and I’ve been super happy with the produce. Bit better than a random fruit and vegetable box as you can actually order what you’ll use. It’s kinda nice to make some neighbourhood connections. I also bought a myself a Manga to try after a tv show I stumbled to on Prime was just super delightful and I found out was based on a book, it’s called Hirayasumi and is gentle and slow and about daily life, connections to work and living - basically just normal people figuring out life. It’s wonderful! And reading back to front left to right is a kinda fun challenge. Sooo yes after a bunch of the school mums were like check out “off campus” I found this subtitled gem instead 😆🤣
When I was little, whenever stayed at my grandpare When I was little, whenever stayed at my grandparents my grandpa used to tuck us into bed SO tight - basically straight jacket style (because apparently that’s how you’d best sleep if you couldn’t roll around…) so my sister and I would lay there pinned under a sheet and an itchy woollen blanket in the most perfectly made bed and as soon as he was gone we’d start the enormous effort of wriggling free. He’d probably roll over in his grave to see my current sleep habits (although perhaps he’s tucked in far too tight 🙊) anyhoo… he was also possibly on to something. Grandparents are cool. And sometimes they have weird habits. Have photos with your people, people.

Had the delightful experience of seeing this littl Had the delightful experience of seeing this little human again at 3mths - her cheeks have just gotten bigger. I should probably follow this post with an image from the second shoot but hey I’m not that planned!

If you’re keen to book a weekend shoot prior to the end of the year July and Sept are looking like your best bet. Weekdays into summer the light is later so that’s an option too. Or pull a sneaky morning off school 😉

A few photos from the “It’s Andrew” Premiere this A few photos from the “It’s Andrew” Premiere this afternoon. This brand new kids show will be available to watch in Australia on @abckids June 1 - It’s Andrew is from the creative minds at @piratesizeproductions

I had with me a very tiny little flash (brand new to me) which did admirably well considering shooting in a cinema with only one light is a less than ideal situation.

If you are new to flash and want an inexpensive starter @godox_global IT32 is a very clever addition to your kit - with a magnetic base that converts to a trigger so your flash can be easily removed off for off camera flash work. Although perhaps shooting in a cinema with a stronger v1 might’ve been a wiser choice…. But hey when your sister calls you for a last min ring in 😆 of course you’re playing with the new toy.

Also: client sighting in the wild x5… including a completely unexpected past wedding client. My kids hated it 😆 (the me seeing people I know bit, not the show - they loved that)
