Lighting for Family Photographers,
a Workshop with Jason Lau

portrait of jason lau photographer

Lighting for Family Photographers

Take control of your light and stop relying on perfect window light in your clients’ homes. Join us for a practical, hands-on workshop and learn how to use off-camera flash to create beautiful, natural-looking light wherever you’re shooting.

Jason will show you how to confidently use flash during family sessions in clients’ homes, as well as the techniques you’ll need if you’re starting to take on commercial work where off-camera lighting is essential. And yes, we’ll also cover the front-on flash look that all the cool kids are doing.

Led by Jason Lau, this three-hour hands-on workshop is designed for family photographers who want more confidence, consistency and creative control. There will be lots of time to ask questions and try things out. We have just 10 places available.

(We know Jason is the right person to teach this workshop because we’ve both learned SO much from him over the years).

Who is Jason?

Our good friend Jason Lau is a Melbourne-based commercial photographer with more than 15 years of experience creating fashion and lifestyle campaigns for local and global brands. Alongside his commercial work, Jason is a brand ambassador (we’ve lost track of how many big industry names, but he gets lots of free stuff) and lectures in photography at Collarts College. He’s an exceptional teacher who has helped photographers around Australia build confidence with lighting through practical, hands-on learning.

Who are Bec + Amy?

We’re Bec and Amy, long-time Melbourne-based family photographers who first met by mutually stalking each other in a hospital waiting room (we were both pregnant at the time). After awkwardly admitting it via Instagram, we became friends and later business partners, running a birth photography business together for several years.
These days, we both work independently as successful family photographers in Melbourne. We continue to challenge and support one another through the ever-changing world of family photography. Amy has an overabundance of ideas, while Bec has an unhealthy enjoyment of systems and admin. Somehow, it works.

When I’m back I can share itinerary for anyone who wants a Japan trip to look like: aesthetics, coffee and stationery 😆

Best 40th idea ever.
Hey 👋🏻 friends new and old. I’m Bec! This week I’m Hey 👋🏻 friends new and old. I’m Bec! This week I’m off to Japan for the first international holiday since before kids (the oldest is 14 🤪 and this is my delayed 40th trip) when I get home it’s all systems go as Oct-Dec is crazy time for photographers. If you’re new here I currently have a few things you can check out: first are Christmas minis both at a Christmas tree farm (Wandin) 🎄 and I’m also photographing minis for @poppiesforgrace party shop who do AMAZING colourful joy filled Christmas photos (Hawthorn). I have a very small handful of dates left before the end of 2026 - only one weekend spot remains for Melbourne family photography 😱, my calendar is open through summer for those wanting to capitalise on the kids being home for school holidays. And for Christmas presents I also offer vouchers which are nicely printed for you ready to gift. Photos really are the best! Reach out by message if any of these interest you.

Phew, that’s a lot!

Happy you’re here and always willing to answer questions about photos/cameras/anything or share my latest read 📚 because I wanna hear yours.

Thanks @danielledobson_photographer for this photo that was taken a recent lighting workshop.
A few portraits of young writers from @storystudio A few portraits of young writers from @storystudioskids holiday program. These guys offer dynamic and wonderful classes both online and off for kids to help them develop their love and craft of writing. My daughter does a weekly class online and it’s the highlight of her week.
Anyone have some last minute Japan 🇯🇵 tips for me? Anyone have some last minute Japan 🇯🇵 tips for me? I have my (delayed) 40th trip very soon 🥳 -leaving the kiddos with the grandparents for just over a week. I won’t inundate the feed with too many photos but I will share some. It’s honestly a bit of a weird time to holiday as a photographer as busy season feels like it’s already well and truly kicked in but this year has been a little atypical in busy periods (what’s with 2026?! I’m not complaining!).

I’m travelling with just my little Fuji (sorry lovely Sony but you’re too big) 📷 and I confess I was getting nervous about having no wide angle so I bought a little converter 🤭

Maybe I’ll make a what gear I’m taking reel… in amongst the mountains of editing I’m planning to smash through before the end of the week 🤪
At yesterdays wedding I popped into a back room fo At yesterdays wedding I popped into a back room for a brief break and there was a woman in there who said, “respectfully how about we don’t talk” 🥳 and then we sat there in silence. What deep relief! Later on we had a chat about how funny it is winding up in people facing jobs (she was a teacher) when the people stuff is not a natural thing. Talking to people (and building rapport quickly) has been something I’ve had to learn over the years - I’d probably say I’m fairly good at it now (although sometimes this skill vanishes when I’m not working 🤪) and honestly it’s a fantastic addition to my life having to hone this skill - but you bet it still wears me out being very “on”.
The whole family together again. And some beautifu The whole family together again. And some beautiful little moments in amongst those looking at the camera groups shots!

I have just one weekend slot available before the end of the year and bookings through to March are open on my calendar. Summer holidays might be a great chance to get the crew together.

This was a pretty ambitious 2hr session 🤪 with a lot of moving parts and I’m pretty obsessed with the outcome. Enormous thanks to Amber for trusting me with her vision and @danielle.monique.photography for the gorgeous vids.
